Originally known as Gilman’s Point, St. Matthews was a large community made up of mostly farms. In 1910 the St. Matthews Produce Exchange was formed and quickly became the second largest potato shipper in the world. Until 1946 the area was known as the "potato capital of the world".  In 1937 many people moved to St. Matthews after the Great Flood seeking higher elevation. What began as a small suburb in louisville experienced rapid growth and development which continues today. 

St. Matthews is a centralized Louisville neighborhood with an ideal location for shopping, parks and an energetic community. It offers an array of local businesses and the city’s largest shopping district, including Louisville's two largest malls. The home feature many different architectural styles, giving home unique character. Famous Louisville architect Stratton Hammon designed many homes in the colonial revival style throughout St. Matthews. The City of St. Matthews works with the St. Matthews Chamber of Commerce to keep the community dynamic. Throughout the year there are a variety events and festivals to bring residents together and support local businesses.
