Prepare your Home for Summer

Memorial Day is the unofficial start of summer. Louisville's climate is considered humid subtropical meaning we have four distinct seasons; with summer being from late May through late September. The following five steps will help prepare your home for the warm weather.

The first thing you want to address is your air conditioning unit. Start by replacing the air filter. Once the filter has been replaced, clean any debris from the registers and exhausts. Once the registers are clean, use a garden hose to clean any dirt form the main unit outside. From there, run your unit while you are away, to test the air conditioner.

The next step is to test for ventilation leaks. Even if your air conditioner works properly, if you have leaks, you can lose some of the cooling. If leaks are found, you can seal them with caulk or weather stripping. Other options to keep your windows cool are reflective file, curtains made of sunscreen-fabric or roller shades. Another easy, but messy job, is checking and replacing insulation. Insulation can compact over the years losing its utility.

If you have a bug issue, set up a barrier. If you have checked for leaks, you have already made sure everything is sealed. Next, spray baseboards, sinks, windows, and doors with a pesticide.

Next, make sure ceiling fans are set to run counter-clockwise. In summer, the breeze blowing down cools the body, by forcing the room air down creating a wind chill effect.

Lastly, check for ways to prevent water damage. Spray water in the gutter to make sure the water comes out the downspouts as opposed to somewhere along the gutter. Inspect your roof to make sure there are no leaks. You will want to look for: cracked caulk or rust spots; buckling, missing, or broken shingles; worn boots around the vent pipes; a missing chimney cap; or moss which could be a signal the roof is decaying.

Heat can take its toll on your home and property. These are five easy steps you can take to make sure your home is prepared, for the summer, while also providing money-saving opportunities.

Magic And Wonder

At The Kentucky Center, Louisville's Kosair Charities and Louisville's Kids Center for Pediatric Therapies presents: The Magic and the Wonder at 5:00 pm on Sunday, May 22, 2016. To date, this annual event has raised over $275,000 for the children of Kosair Charities.

Mac King, Charlie Frye and Company, and Stephen Knowles are nationally acclaimed magicians and have come to town for this benefit.

Mac King has been named "Magician of the Year," by the Magic Castle in Hollywood, and has a running show at Harrah's Casino and Hotel in Las Vegas. Mac King and Charlie Frye specialize in comedy magic, while Stephen Knowles is a ventiloquist. The three national acts will be joined by local magicians Patrick and Janice Miller.

The show, proper, begins at 5:00 pm, but the magicians will perform close-up magic, in the lobby, starting at 4:00 pm. The show is safe for all ages and tickets start at $17.50.  The show is approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes, with an intermission.

The Kentucky Center was opened in 1983 in order to provide a home for the Louisville's performing arts groups. They provide the home for the Broadway Series, has hosted presidential debates (1984 between Ronald Reagan and Walter Mondale) and religious leaders (the Dalai Lama). In 2010, Billboard Magazine ranked the Kentucky Center in the top 10 grossing venue in the world.

Magic can be entertaining for the majority of people; come to the Kentucky Center to be amazed while supporting Kosair's ongoing commitment to Kentuckiana's children that need long-term medical care.

Mother's Day Alternatives

This coming weekend is very busy for Louisville. Not only is the Kentucky Derby Festival wrapping up, but Mother's Day is also Sunday, May 8. With all the guests in town, it will be difficult to find a restaurant to celebrate Mother's Day. Not only will restaurants be busy, but it is a Mother's Day cliché.

Two organizations are offering free admissions to mothers: The Louisville Zoo and Kentucky Kingdom. This is a wonderful opportunity to provide your mother with a different, surprising day out.

McDonald's Restaurants is sponsoring Mother's Day at the Zoo. You can enjoy the day to learn the similarities between human and animal mothers of differing species. Zookeepers will be offering talks about the mothers of animals, such as the zebra, Morena, who gave birth to Annette, last year. A scavenger hunt will be offered, as well.  The first 500 mothers will receive a gift bag courtesy of McDonalds. From 10:00 am - 2:00 pm, McDonaldland characters will be available for meeting and pictures.

Kentucky Kingdom, Louisville's recently reopened amusement park, is opening for its second weekend of its third season under new ownership. The usual range of rides, you expect from an amusement park, are offered; ranging from children's rides to the five roller coasters. The Aqua Theater offers a rescued sea lion show, with proceeds from merchandise sales going to the World Wildlife Fund. Fodor's Travel Guide has named Kentucky Kingdom among the top 10 amusement parks, for 2016.

Mother's get free admission, but admission prices, for the other members of the family, to the Zoo are $16.25 for adults and $11.75 for children, aged 3 to 11, and seniors, aged 60 and older; Kentucky Kingdom admission is $39.95 through May 22, 2016, so come out and enjoy the day outside, with your family and either learn about animal life or scratch your thrill-seeking itch.
